Ketamine as a catalyst for deep therapeutic change

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy combines the neurological effects of ketamine with expert psychotherapy — creating a unique window of neuroplasticity during which profound therapeutic work becomes possible. Think of your brain's thought patterns as well-worn paths in a field. Conditions like depression and trauma carve these paths deeper and deeper, making it hard to find a new route. Ketamine temporarily softens these rigid mental patterns — stimulating new neural connections and opening up your brain to new ways of thinking, feeling, and processing. I view ketamine as a catalyst, not a cure. The therapeutic work before and after each session is where real transformation happens.

🧠

How It Works Neurologically

Ketamine temporarily quiets the default mode network — the part of the brain responsible for rumination, self-criticism, and rigid thinking patterns. Your defenses are lowered, allowing you to access buried emotions, gain new perspectives, break free from ruminative cycles, and reconnect with yourself in ways that aren't available in ordinary consciousness.

💊

Sublingual Lozenges — Not IV Infusions

I work through Journey Clinical, which handles all medical eligibility, prescriptions, and monitoring. Clients use sublingual lozenges in my office — a gentler, more accessible form of ketamine that is typically less expensive than IV infusion clinics and can be combined seamlessly with ongoing psychotherapy. Journey Clinical fees are often partially covered by major insurance plans including Aetna, Cigna, and Blue Cross Blue Shield.

🛡️

Medically Supervised & Safe

Ketamine is a legal, safe medical anesthetic that has been used for decades. Journey Clinical's medical team conducts thorough screening to ensure KAP is appropriate for you before any session. All dosing takes place in my office under careful therapeutic supervision — not in a clinical infusion setting, but in the context of a full therapeutic relationship.

🌿

Integrated Therapeutic Container

Unlike standalone ketamine infusion clinics, every session is embedded in a full therapeutic relationship. Preparation, the dosing experience, and integration are all held within our ongoing work together — using EMDR and IFS to make the insights from each session as therapeutically potent as possible. The integration sessions are where lasting change is consolidated.

Step-by-step: what to expect

KAP is a structured, careful process — not a single session. Here's how a complete treatment program unfolds.

1

Free Consultation

We talk about your history, goals, and whether KAP is a good fit. No pressure, no commitment. If we proceed, you're referred to Journey Clinical for medical screening.

2

Preparation Sessions

Before your first dosing session, we establish a strong therapeutic alliance, set intentions for your journey, and answer any questions you have. We want to make sure you feel safe, informed, and ready for the experience.

3

Guided Dosing Sessions

Conducted in my office in a calm, comfortable setting — often with eyeshades and music. You take the sublingual lozenge and I hold space as you move through the experience. Sessions typically last 1.5–2.5 hours.

4

Integration Sessions

The most important part. We process what emerged during the dosing session, translate insights into daily life, and consolidate lasting change. EMDR and IFS are powerful integration tools.

This modality may be right for you if…

Traditional treatments often work from the outside in. KAP works from the inside out — creating the internal conditions necessary for profound healing.

Not all ketamine treatment is the same

The difference between KAP and a standalone infusion clinic is the therapeutic container — and that container is what turns a pharmacological experience into lasting psychological change.

KAP FAQ

Is ketamine safe?

Ketamine has been used safely in medical settings since the 1970s. At the doses used in KAP — sublingual lozenges rather than IV infusions — side effects are mild and temporary. Journey Clinical's medical team conducts thorough screening to ensure it's appropriate for you, and all dosing sessions take place in my office under careful therapeutic supervision.

What's the difference between KAP and a ketamine infusion clinic?

At an infusion clinic, ketamine is administered intravenously in a medical setting, typically without a therapist present. In KAP, a licensed psychotherapist is present throughout the dosing experience and works with you before and after each session. This therapeutic container is what turns a pharmacological experience into lasting psychological change.

Is KAP available in Woodmere / the Five Towns?

Yes — KAP dosing sessions are available in person at both my Woodmere (Five Towns, Long Island) and Manhattan (Midtown) offices. An integrated KAP therapist in the Five Towns is extremely rare — most Long Island KAP options are medical infusion clinics without the therapeutic component.

How many sessions does a full course require?

Journey Clinical's standard protocol involves 6–8 dosing sessions for an initial treatment course, plus preparation and integration sessions. Many clients feel meaningful shifts within the first 2–3 dosing sessions. We design your treatment plan based on your goals and response to the initial sessions.

Can I do KAP if I'm on medication?

Many clients do KAP while on psychiatric medications. Journey Clinical's medical team reviews your full medication list during screening and will advise on any adjustments needed. This is handled carefully and collaboratively.

What does KAP cost?

Preparation and integration sessions are $250 (standard rate). Dosing sessions are longer and priced accordingly. Complete treatment packages are available and discussed during your consultation. Journey Clinical's medical fees are billed separately and are often partially covered by Aetna, Cigna, and Blue Cross Blue Shield.
